FormSaver Security

You do not want users to be able to download your data files. Here is how to prevent that from happening, using MacHTTP or WebStar's security features. NetPresenz does not support this type of security, so you may not wish to use NetPresenz with FormSaver on a public site.

If your server supports plugins, you can simply install FS Secure, to prevent hackers from accessing your data files. Otherwise, read the rest of this page to use Realms to accomplish the same thing.

First, create a new realm, called "FormSaver". Use ".fs" for the match string. This will automatically include your ".fsx" and ".fsr" files, since ".fs" is a substring of these. Users do not need direct access to .fsr or .fsx files.

From the WebStar Admin application, select "Realms..." from the "Configure" menu.

Here is essentially what your realms dialog box should look like:

Next, you need to create a password, to prevent people from accessing the FormSaver realm. Select "Add Password..." from the "Configure" menu in the WebStar Admin program. Do not use the sample password.

The web page owners can still access their .fs, .fsr, and .fsx files through AppleTalk, FTP, or ARA, if these services are set up. If they really want to download their files over the web you might want to consider being fancier with the domains, so that different .fs files are protected by different passwords.

If you plan on accessing .fs files over the web, consider setting up your web browser so that it saves .fs files, instead of viewing them in the browser. Tab-delimited files don't make for great reading.
